Gardens have a magical way of connecting us to our memories—whether we’re recalling them, experiencing them, or creating new ones. Perhaps it’s a country you’ve visited, with its surrounding flora, or an inspiring garden you’ve explored. Maybe it’s a flower or tree from your childhood that brings memories rushing back, prompting you to recreate those moments in your own garden. For me, it’s a mix of all these influences, along with plants gifted to me by friends, family and colleagues.
Each has its own one carries its own special story, adding layers of meaning to my garden and making it a living reflection of my experiences. A garden becomes a tapestry of interwoven plants, items and memories. Sharing these stories with others while walking them through your garden can spark wonderful conversations.
Gardens can also engage all the senses—sight, sound, touch, and especially scent. Did you know scent is the strongest trigger of memory? That’s because the olfactory system processes smell in the same area of the brain where memories and emotions are stored.
Do you have memory plants in your garden? What memories do they bring to life?
Share your stories with us for a chance to win – competition ends May 20th!
