How to Create a Bird Attracting Garden

If you want to create a bird-attracting garden, the best place to start is by planting natives.  They’ll provide birds with shelter and habitat as well as the following food sources throughout the seasons

Food Sources:

  • Insects: Plants like Acacia, Leptospermum, Kunzea and Melaleuca attract insects and bugs that are a vital source of protein for many bird species. Using mulch and leaf litter in your garden will also encourage insect life.
  • Fruit: Choose a variety of species that provide berries and fruit at different times of the year to ensure a continuous fruit source.  Try a mix of Elaeocarpus reticulatus, Syzygium ‘Lilly Pilly’, Austromyrtus dulcis and Melastoma affine.
  • Nuts and seeds: Seed-eating birds, like finches, prefer areas of dense vegetation to nest, forage and shelter in. Create the ideal environment by planting native grass species alongside thick shrubs. Good options include Acacia, Lomandra, Themeda species and Poa.
  • Nectar: For nectar-eating birds plant flowering natives such as Banksia, Grevillea, Hakea, Callistemon, Melaleuca, and Correa.

Habitat:

A lot of smaller bird species rely on dense vegetation not only for nesting but to hide from larger, aggressive or carnivorous birds. Aim to create layers of habitat by mixing plants with different heights and growth forms: Think vertical structure – from the ground up- including groundcovers such as grasses or ferns, small shrubs, tall shrubs and eventually a couple of trees that may one day provide hollows.

Water:

Fresh water is essential.  Offer it in a bird bath, hollowed boulders or a garden pond.  Placement matters – birds prefer water sources to be under some form of cover so that they feel safe while bathing and drinking. If possible, place your birdbath near shrubs or trees, and keep your birdbath away from direct sunlight to prevent the water from heating up!
