How to Grow Carrots

How to grow carrots

Daucas carota

Carrots can be planted all year round in cooler climates and during the autumn and winter months in the subtropics. However, they generally don’t perform well in the tropical regions.

Planting: Choose a full sun position and ensure that the soil is friable (loose), free draining and has only light compost added. Avoid fresh manure or strong compost, as these will cause your carrots to fork.

Grow: Carrots are best sown as seed directly into garden beds. As they dislike being transplanted.

Cultural Tips: Once seedling emerge, thin them out to provide 2.5-5cm of growing space per plant. Fertilise with Rocky Point Poultry Manure, and maintain consistent watering, which is critical for root development.

Harvest: ‘Baby’ carrots can be harvested in around 10 weeks. Harvesting a few early helps the others left behind to grow larger over the next few weeks.

Varieties: Topweight, Baby, Early Chantenay, Manchester Table, Heirloom Rainbow, Western Red.

Key Growing Info:

  • Position: Full sun
  • Watering: Regular
  • Harvest Time: 10-14 weeks
  • Seed Depth: 6mm
  • Seed Spacing: 3cm
