How to Grow Leeks

Winter Leeks

Leeks (Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum) are part of the onion family and are a hardy, easy-to-grow, pest resistant biennial vegetable- though most gardeners grow and harvest them as an annual. In cooler climates, leeks should be planted during the warmer months, while in warm and hot climates they are best planted during autumn and winter.

How to grow leeks:

Prepare your soil by mixing in Rocky Point Organic Health Garden Soil and Rocky Point ActivGrow Soil Improver.

Leeks like a free-draining sweet soil with a soil pH of 6.5-7.5, so if you have acidic soil add some dolomite or garden lime before planting.

If you’re growing your leek in pots or planter containers, use Rocky Point Organic Potting Mix for best results.

To ensure a bountiful harvest, give your leeks regular water and apply Rocky Point ActivGrow Fertiliser Pellets throughout the growing season.

Harvest:

Leeks can take some to mature- expect harvesting  at around 18-25 weeks when the white blanched stem is around 15cm long and 2.5cm in diameter.  However, leeks can remain in the soil for up to 12 months without issue, allowing for flexible harvesting timing.

Eating:

All parts of the leek are edible and are cooked in a variety of classic European dishes – soups, pies, quiche and more!

Varieties:

Musselburgh, Welsh Wonder, King Richard, Mammoth Blanch.

Key Growing Guide:

  • Position: Moderate sun to semi-shade
  • Watering: Moderate watering
  • Harvest Time: 18-25 weeks
  • Seed Depth: 5 mm
  • Seed Spacing: 10 cm apart
