How to grow Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum)

rhubarb

A perennial vegetable that grows best in cooler climates. Tolerates Mediterranean conditions and elevated locations in warm temperate and subtropical zones but struggles with extreme heat or prolonged dryness.

Planting: Plant rhubarb crowns in autumn or winter or use seedlings in spring.

Grow: Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot with well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Heavy feeders, so prepare garden beds with Rocky Point ActivGrow Soil Improver or Cow Manure Plus compost. Feed regularly with Rocky Point ActivGrow Pellets.

Cultural Tips: Rhubarb grows up to 1m high, so space plants well. Divide every 3-4 years in cooler months.

Harvest: Only the stems are edible—leaves are toxic. In warm climates, stems may stay green. A healthy plant produces 6-8 stems every few months. Eat raw or cooked.
