Rocky Points new industry- leading fibre substrate
RP HydroGro Wood Fibre is a revolutionary growing medium that has been a staple in European and American horticulture for over 30 years. After three years of research and development, with both internal and external grow trials here at Rocky Point we are excited to introduce to the market – RP HydroGro – a Wood Fibre substrate.

What is RP HydroGro?
RP HydroGro is created using a thermal refinement process. Pine chips are defibrillated under high pressure, transformed and sterilised exceeding 100-degree heat which produces fine, long strands of fibre with an expansive surface area. These unique fibres maximise moisture availability, making RP HydroGro’s properties similar to coir pith and peat moss. Unlike these imported products, however, RP HydroGro is a local Australian-made substrate. Our timber stock is sourced from PEFC-certified sustainably managed Australian plantations making this a truly sustainable resource.
RP HydroGro has been engineered to optimise water retention and plant growth. It is an advanced fibre substrate offering low bulk density which cultivates aeration and root development.

Pine Trees
It starts with Australian sustainably sourced pine tree, we use Pinus elliottii, Southern pine (lob lolly pine), and Pine caribae- Caribbean pine.

This is then broken into raw pine bark chips that is loaded into a specialised machine to defibrillate and grind into tiny fibres.

RP HydroGro wood fibre is then used on its own or as a substitute for peat moss or coir in a professional growing media offering low bulk density which cultivates aeration and root development while maintaining excellent water holding capacity.
How it's made

What our customers have said...
Over the course of two consecutive grow trials with different species we found the wood fibre to not only be very reliable but produce excellent root growth, impressive water holding capacity and lush foliage. The media showed that at a minimum it was ‘more than’ an acceptable replacement for coir fibre.
Proven results and the bonus of using a local and more cost – effective material has led to our nursery making the change from coir fibre to wood fibre. We’re thankful for the opportunity to work with Rocky Point who continue to develop and implement innovative and sustainable products for our ever – evolving industry.
AndreasensJose Florenciano, Qld Nursery Manager
RP HydroGro exceeded our expectations as far as growth and turnover of stock was concerned. We witnessed better root growth and lusher, brighter foliage.
The added benefit of RP HydroGro is that it is a local and sustainable product at a more affordable price.
Marlborough Nursery
"We’ve noticed stronger root calipers and a healthier overall appearance in our plants. The color is excellent, and we’ve seen far fewer fungal organisms in the media compared to peat"

Q & A
How does RP HydroGro compare to peat or coir?
RP HydroGro has similar abilities to peat and coir, but RP HydroGro is locally supplied and sustainable. RP HydroGro comparatively has greater re-wettability. RP HydroGro has been tested to absorb water in 13 seconds, whereas peat moss has little re-wettability and coir pith can take up to six times as much to absorb.
What species of pine are used?
We use Pinus elliottii, Southern pine (lob lolly pine), and Pine caribae– Caribbean pine.
Why is wood fibre white in appearance in potting mix?
Rocky Point HydroGro is made from a soft wood pine chip which is white in appearance. It goes through a process of extreme pressure and temperature which sterilises and defibrillates the chip leaving the fibres ready for use and the colour intact.
