ORGANIC HARVEST

One of the most rewarding parts of home gardening is simply being able to walk outside to pick some fresh herbs for your Sunday roast, or a ripe, juicy tomato for your lunchtime salad.

Growing your own produce can be so much more beneficial than just taste and convenience; you’ll reduce waste, save money and finish with a beautifully knobby carrot you grew yourself to make it all worth it. But easily the most important of all is knowing exactly what goes into your garden, meaning there won’t be any surprise chemicals showing up on your dinner table.

Rocky Point are passionate about home gardeners growing organic produce, so we’ve teamed up two of our most beloved products to help you create a garden that can help you get compliments on your Organic Harvest.

Pairing soil improvers with mulches is a tip taken straight from Mother Nature herself. Adding a soil improver like ActivGrow to your soil adds beneficial organic matter and microbes. Then layering an organic mulch like Sugar Cane Mulch on top protects from the elements, conserves moisture and also feeds as it breaks down.

How to get the best results growing an organic garden

1. Dig ActivGrow Soil Improver into the top layer of existing soil (about 60mm deep).

2. Plant out your veggie seedlings and water in well.

3. Cover the garden bed with a layer (about 50mm thick) with Sugar Cane Mulch. Leave some space around the stems of your plants to make sure they don’t rot.

As a guide you will need 2x 30L bags of ActivGrow Soil Improver for every square metre of garden bed and a 20sqm bale of Sugar Cane Mulch can cover 8sqm at 50mm thick.

SUNLIGHT

Sunlight

Most vegetables and fruits need plenty of sunshine to encourage strong growth and high yields, so it’s best to locate your new garden in an open site in a nice sunny spot. Ensure your veggie patch is in a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

WATERING

Watering

During the growing season it's important to give your plants enough water to establish strong roots and produce healthy fruit. After planting, water enough to keep the top 15cm of soil moist. Once the plants look as though they have taken hold and are starting to grow you can back off watering a little, and water deeply when the top 5-10cm feels dry.

FERTILISING

Fertilising

Even with healthy soil, plants need to be fed regularly to keep up with the extra nutrients required while fruiting. Feeding with an organic fertiliser like ActivGrow Fertiliser Pellets every 4-6 weeks will ensure a plentiful harvest.

NEXT SEASON

Once your seasonal harvest has found its way to your table, it’s time to prepare your patch for the next season. Remove any out of season plants and dig through any remaining mulch back into the soil. Finish with a fresh layer of Sugar Cane Mulch, to prevent weeds and lock in moisture while you start preparing your next season planting.
