Plant Profile: Zucchini

Zucchini, a member of the squash family, needs at least 6-8 hours of full sun and consistently moist soil high in organic matter to perform.

Profile-ZucchiniSome zucchini varieties are vining types that require a trellis or a lot of room to sprawl, but there are also bush types suitable for container gardening and small space gardening.

Sowing: Sow seeds 2.5cm apart in rows or hills. Start in seedling trays first and transplant.

Soil: Well drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Dig through your own home compost, or ActivGrow Soil Improver to give your gardens a boost.

Sunlight: Full sun

Watering: Regular watering at the base/stems of plants. Avoid watering leaves.

Pollination: Zucchini is a monoecious plant, meaning each plant has both male and female flowers. A female flower has a small swelling (the ovary) at the base of its short-stem. A male flower has a long, thin stem—and is usually larger than the female. Bees and insects must visit the male flower then the female flower for pollination.

Harvest: Best picked around 15-20cm, and regular picking encourages more fruiting

Varieties: Black beauty, Golden, Costata Romanesco, Italian light green and more!
