Season Edibles – Potatoes

Winter Potatoes

Solanum tuberosum For best results, always buy certified seed potatoes as these are disease resistant.

Planting: Plant your potatoes in traditional garden beds that have been prepared using Rocky Point Cow Manure. Ensure that the soil is free-draining and slightly acidic. The ”No-dig” garden method also works well. If choosing to grow in large tubs or potato bags use Rocky Points Organic Potting Mix.

Grow:  Cut your seed potatoes into pieces ensuring that there is an ‘eye’ shoot on each piece. Always plant potato pieces with the eye facing up.

Cultural Tips: As your potato plants grow keep mounding compost and mulch up the stems as to encourage more roots to grow, this will lead to more potato tuber production. Regular watering is a  must.

Harvest: Once the potato plants start to die down, it is time to start digging up your potatoes. Generally, the crop will reach maturity at 20 weeks.

Varieties: Sebago, Pontiac, Desiree, Nicola, Dutch Cream, Toolangi Delight, Purple Congo, Spunta.
