Winter days with their milder temperatures are a great time to give the garden a touch of TLC in the form of weeding, fertilising, new plantings, pruning of certain plants and mulching. It’s a good time to engage in any large garden overhauls or installations.
For deciduous plants it is the best time to do a tidy up prune and this includes roses.
You may not see much re-growth from any other pruning that you execute during early winter but if you wait until the end of winter, and incorporate some fertilising, as soon as the weather turns warm your pruned shrubs, roses and fruit trees will be bursting with new growth.
Creating new garden beds with Rocky Point’s Garden Soil will help build the right foundation. If it’s time to replenish your organic matter levels, it’s as easy as adding Cow Manure Plus or ActivGrow Soil Improver (or both!). It’s also important to re-mulch your gardens over the colder months to help protect your plant’s root systems from the cooler temperatures.
Decorative gardens deserve decorative mulches. The team at Rocky Point have created one of the most environmentally friendly, functional, effective and colourful mulches. The coloured mulch range really are a great way to finish off a garden makeover and give the garden a real lift to help showcase your plants with their pop of colour. This mulch is a high carbon mulch that lasts really well with the added bonus of coming in various colours; Blackwood (Black), and Outback (Rust Red). There is also Natural Cypress (Brown), and Red Cypress (Deep Red) available.
Mulching has many benefits; from retaining soil moisture, supressing weeds, stopping soil erosion, slowing rainfall and regulating soil temperatures, to adding a decorative touch.
