Plant Profile: Cucamelon

Cucemelon, also known as Mexican sour melons (Melothria scabra), are a cute little variety from the cucurbit (cucumber) family and look great on a plate or pack neatly into a lunch box. They also pickle well.

Also known as the Mexican sour gherkins or mouse melon, these fruits are native to areas spanning Mexico to Venezuela. Fruits are about the size of grapes and taste like cucumbers with a hint of citrus.

Watering: These are drought tolerant plants, but they will produce more fruit if you keep them well watered. Water deeply and less frequently over short and often for strong root growth.

Soil: Cucamelon will perform well in a well drained soil or even in a pot. Add plenty of organic matter like ActivGrow Soil Improver to your beds before planting.

Mulching: Mulching around the base of your cucamelon plants will assist in retaining moisture in your soil, an organic mulch like Sugar Cane Mulch is ideal, just ensure to keep it away from directly contacting the stem of the plant.

Support: As this is a climbing, vining plant, ensure you have good support for it to grow along, or it will spread throughout your garden instead.
